What is Anodizing?

Anodizing converts metal surfaces, commonly aluminum, into durable and corrosion-resistant aluminum oxide through an electrolytic process. The thickness and surface strength are greatly enhanced which serves aluminum oxide well in providing excellent wear and corrosion protection.

The Three Types Of Anodizing

Type I - Chromic Acid Anodizing

The oldest of the anodizing techniques, type I produces a thin anodic coat that is more opaque in color and challenging to dye than the other techniques. The coat is also soft and more ductile than the other variations. These properties lend type I coats ideally for protective coating on optical components.

Type II - Sulfuric Acid Anodizing

The most common anodizing technique, it involves an electrochemical process submerged in a sulfuric acid bath to produce a natural oxidation for aluminum. It provides good electrical conductivity as well making the anodized part resistant to stains and heat. Furthermore, type II anodizing allows the ability to dye a variety of colors.

Type III - Hard Coat Anodizing

Hard coat anodizing produces the thickest and most dense anodize out of all three techniques allowing it to be used for aluminum components that will be applied in extreme wear situations or corrosive environments. The anodize is also useful for applications requiring a more demanding form of electrical insulation. In terms of dye, the anodize can be black dyed whilst other colors will be less decorative.
